How to Get Your Zimbabwe Plastic Driver’s Licence Via WhatsApp – Step-by-Step Guide

WhatsApp Now and Get Your Zimbabwe Plastic Driver’s Licence in 30 Days

The Zimbabwe government has introduced a simpler way to get a new plastic driver’s licence. If you’re still using the old blue paper copy, you can now upgrade with just a few WhatsApp messages.

How It Works

The Ministry of Transport has outlined a step-by-step process for Zimbabwean drivers to switch to the new scannable plastic driver’s licence.

“Ready to upgrade from your blue copy to a plastic licence? Follow the easy steps below,” the Ministry of Transport announced on social media.

To start the process, drivers must save the number 0778112264 on WhatsApp and send a simple message: “Hi”. They will then receive automated instructions to follow.

Once the status changes to “verified”, drivers must book an appointment for biometric capture. This step is crucial for completing the application.

“Visit your nearest VID depot for biometric capture and pay a processing fee of $5 USD or its ZiG equivalent.”

After completing these steps, the new plastic licence will be processed within 30 working days. Drivers can then collect it from their nearest ZimPost office.

Why Upgrade?

The plastic driver’s licence comes with several benefits. It is scannable and fully compliant with Southern African Development Community (SADC), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and East African Community (EAC) standards.

“The new scannable licence allows Zimbabwean drivers to drive in 25 African countries, making it easier to travel and work abroad.”

The system also enhances security by creating an electronic database of all licensed drivers. This database will be linked to law enforcement agencies, improving road safety and reducing fraud.

What About the Old Metal Licence?

For now, metal licences remain valid. However, authorities will announce a phase-out date in the future.

Drivers who already have a valid licence will not need to take a road test again. However, they will need to complete biometric updates and undergo a medical check-up, including an eye test, every five years.
